Chapter Fourteen

Tuesday Morning, August 12, 1947

I slept better that night than I had in a while. I actually woke up late, realizing I had forgotten to set my new alarm clock. I showered hurriedly and wolfed down one of Mrs. Murphy’s doughnuts and a cup of black coffee for breakfast before rushing out the door. I signed in on the board downstairs at the precinct just after nine and took the steps two at a time up to my desk in the detectives’ room. Alvin was out. I hoped he wasn’t at Miss Caldwell’s place, but even if he was, he’d most likely be gone by the time we got there.

In thinking about it, he was probably talking to Mr. Jarvis again over at the Grundy Market. I made a mental note to swing over there myself later. I spent the next several hours working on the petty larceny case, doing research, making phone calls, and clock watching. Finally, at ten after twelve, I signed myself out and pointed my car in the direction of Knapp and Franklin Place. I made it there in ten minutes and found a place to park in the shade of a gnarled old oak. I paced up and down the sidewalk a few minutes before finally deciding to walk to the bus stop on Juneau and Prospect to meet Alan. He was surprised to see me as he stepped off, a cloud of exhaust surrounding him as the old city bus ground its gears and pulled away.

“I thought I was going to meet you on the corner?” he said, waving the exhaust away.

“I got here early, so I decided to come your way. We can walk back together.”

“I like the sound of that. How was your morning?”

“Uneventful. Though I finally got some actual work done on the larceny case.”

“Good, that should make the chief happy.”

“It’s progress, anyway. But mainly I’ve been thinking about what I’m going to ask Mrs. Crow.”

“And?”

I glanced over at Alan, so handsome in his police uniform and cap, and shook my head. “And I don’t know, exactly. I’ll wing it, I think.”

We started out walking north on Prospect, Juneau Park just to the east of us on the other side of the avenue. It was a beautiful day, not too warm, not too cool, a nice breeze coming off the lake. There were only a couple of clouds in the brilliant blue sky, looking like lost little lambs in search of their flock.

“Did you have any lunch?”

“I packed a sandwich, and I bought a bottle of Coke from a street vendor. I ate on the bus. You?”

“No, but I’m too nervous to eat. I’ll grab something later.”

“Okay. What’s the address again?” Alan said as we reached Franklin Place and turned onto Knapp Street.

“It’s 829 East Knapp. Just past Marshall Street, kitty-corner from St. Paul’s.”

“St. Paul’s is a great place. I’ve always loved the architecture.”

“Me too. Let’s pick up the pace, or our lunch hours will be long over before we even get there.
